Fear is one of the most natural human emotions
Fear has been part of our survival for thousands of years. But in today’s world, most of our fears are not connected to immediate danger – they often live in our thoughts, feelings and subconscious. Some fears hold us back from dreaming. Some prevent us from loving. Some make us constantly control ourselves or hide our true nature.
What is fear?
Fear is one of the most natural human emotions. It has been part of our survival for thousands of years, helping us sense danger and protect ourselves. But in today’s world, most of our fears are not connected to wild animals or immediate threats – they often live in our thoughts, feelings and subconscious.
In holistic therapy, we look at fear as a messenger. Fear is not an enemy, but a sign that some part of us needs attention, safety and healing.
The most common core fears
Although every person’s story is different, many anxieties, tensions and inner conflicts have some universal core fears behind them – fear of abandonment, rejection, loss of control, failure and being visible.
Some fears hold us back from dreaming. Some prevent us from loving. Some make us constantly control, strive or hide our true nature. In holistic therapy, we look at fear as a messenger – fear is not an enemy, but a sign that some part of us needs attention, safety and healing.
Fear of abandonment can manifest as a need for others’ approval. Fear of rejection makes us hide our true nature. Fear of losing control brings constant anxiety and planning. Fear of failure holds us back from starting. Fear of being visible prevents us from sharing our opinions.
How does fear affect us?
Long-term fear or anxiety affects both body and mind. The body can be in a constant state of alertness and the nervous system cannot rest. Fear can manifest as anxiety, sleep problems, tension in the body, fatigue and emotional withdrawal.
Sometimes we learn to hide our fears so well that we no longer notice how much they are guiding our lives. Fear can affect relationships, work life and self-esteem – often without us even being aware of it.
What can we do with fears?
We do not have to forcefully get rid of fears. Often healing begins with learning to listen to ourselves and creating more of a sense of safety within. The first step is to honestly notice what you are actually afraid of. Ask yourself: what is the worst thing I am afraid of? When did I first experience this feeling? Awareness alone helps reduce the impact of fear. Bringing attention to the body also helps – conscious breathing, spending time in nature and meditation help the nervous system calm down.
Fear does not have to run your life
We all experience fears. They are part of being human. But fear does not have to determine your choices, relationships or quality of life. When we learn to notice and understand our fears, the possibility arises to live more in alignment with ourselves – in a calmer, more conscious and freer place. Sometimes it is enough that someone walks beside us and helps us see what is hard to notice alone. If you feel that you would like to understand your fears more deeply, you are always welcome to come to us.
